A Conversation with Artists on Nature, Creativity and Education

Connecting people with nature to cultivate affection and love for the natural world is at the core of environmental education. Art is closely related to nature, and the process of artistic creation, as well as its works, serves as an excellent approach to environmental education. This workshop invites five artists from different fields to share their experiences and insights on how they use various artistic media to guide the public in understanding nature.

B2 Board Game For Nature Education

The workshop will allow participants to experience first-hand how to use two locally-designed ecological board games, "Law of the Forest" and "Hong Kong Animal Exploration Team", to learn more about Hong Kong’s natural ecology in a fun way. In this workshop, participants will learn about different ecological concepts, such as the food chain, natural selection, survival of the fittest, and the impact of human behavior on ecology. Participants will then be guided to think about making changes in their daily lives.

The threefold approaches to environmental education include education about/in/for the environment. Citizen science empowers the general public to actively participate in scientific research and contribute to environmental conservation, making it an excellent educational strategy that encompasses all three approaches.

This workshop, led by Outdoor Wildlife Learning Hong Kong and the Coral Academy at the School of Life Sciences, CUHK, will share their experiences in utilizing citizen science for various environmental education activities. Participants will explore the potential and adaptability of citizen science in the future.

However, due to the nature of environmental education, implementing an effective program in schools is influenced by various factors. This workshop brings together scholar from teacher training institutes, environmental education organization, educational innovation institution, and school teachers to share experiences in cross-sector collaboration—designing school-based environmental education curriculum. Participants will engage in discussions with professionals from different fields to explore the future direction of environmental education in schools.

This is a child teaching activity sharing session focused on Hong Kong’s biodiversity, including the design concept of the activity and previously implemented activities. Participants will also try out a set of Hong Kong biodiversity-themed game cards specially designed for young children. This will help us understand how young children learn through playing with the game cards, and we can also experience the fun of playing with the cards.

B6 Promoting Marine Science Education through Integration of History, Art and Science at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum

Advocating our mission of “exploring human-ocean interaction with the community through History, Art, and Science”, the Swire Marine Discovery Centre at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum actively engages in partnerships with a diverse group of stakeholders for fostering marine science education. We provide the public and students with a variety of engaging learning activities, including exhibitions, guided tours, talks, workshops and movie screenings, with an aim to rebuilding the human-ocean relationship. In addition to addressing the challenges and opportunities in our sharing, this workshop will offer participants an exploratory journey and interactive experience of learning about the ocean.

B7 Urban Ecology, Tour to Taikoo Square

In the bustling city, there are different wildlife neighbors such as birds, butterflies, and bees, who have always co-existed with us in the same place. However, amid high-rises around Taikoo Place, there is a new square park with different native Hong Kong plants, providing a living space for animal neighbors and a place for everyone to rest. This guided tour will take you around the park to learn about its design concept, as well as its Hong Kong native plants. If you’re lucky, you can even witness the animal neighbors here!
